As i pull up nxt to the big ass outdoor BBQ griller, i spot a half dozen high school girlies checkin me and the bike out. i'm 44 but seem to have that innocent dude next door face some chix dig. i pull the bike back onto it's stand, letting it idle, and look their way.
"y'all watch my bike and don't let anybody steal it!" *wink*
i can still hear them giggling as i walk thru the front doors of the grocery. There's a long line back at the deli counter, so i opt for crackers and a bowl of hummus. when i return outside and tuck the pkg under a bungee on the rear rack, i yell "THANKS!" at 'em and one shouts back, over the din of the pipe:
HEY, WE THINK SINCE WE HAD TO WATCH YOUR SCOOTER, YOU SHOULD TAKE ONE OF US FOR A RIDE!
of course i concur, and a plain jane junior/senior brunette hops on the seat. i instruct her where to place her feet & off we go. neither of us are sporting a helmet. her warm hands feel nice against my lower ribs; every once in a while a boob bumps into my back. i begin to wonder if the cold air is having an effect on those nipples. Couldn't tell you how many times I've innocent(i)ly flirted with some girl i'll probly never see again when there's a running scooter beneath us.
so i make the usual trivial chitchat:
HER NAME? YES, THESE LIL BIKES ARE FUN, AREN'T THEY? I WORK AT THE RECORD STORE JUST DOWN THE ROAD. YES, SHE KNOWS. SHE CAME IN DURING XMAS LOOKING FOR A RECORD PLAYER.. YADAYADA BLA-BLAH
it's kinda cold, no helmet gloves or jackets, either 1 of us. hence i decide to kill the ride after one spin round the block and return to my duties selling crappy cd's to good kids.
but i tell her as we return to the cadre of grinning girls sitting around the outdoor patio table,
YOU KNOW THEY'RE GONNA BE ALL JEALOUS OF YOU!..
So: even for old dudes, life can be nice to you, at times"
